The Mask

The space. The urge. The drive. The metaphor.

The art of mask-work is multi-dimensional, encompassing not only the physical act of donning a mask over one's face, but also the performative space that is created and the objects and bodies within that space. A mask is more than a physical object that one wears; it is the intention behind the mask and the effort taken to meet the full level of the mask’s expression. The construction of the performance space plays a pivotal role in mask-work, as it involves the utilization of various flats, set pieces, and props to create an environment that reflects the story and theme. Through the use and movement of these physical bodies and objects, a story is crafted within the performance space. In a farce, for instance, the many entrances and exits of each character symbolize the tumultuous and chaotic energy of the character’s world, each struggling to outdo each other in a bid to satisfy their individual needs. The mask, therefore, is not just a tool for the performer but a vital metaphor which serves to bring the story to life.
